This Health Research Program opportunity is with Dr. Xiaoyan Guo, Department of genetics and genome sciences.
Project Description: The accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria is closely linked to various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders. Our lab focuses on uncovering the molecular and cellular mechanisms that maintain mitochondrial health. One key mechanism is mitophagy—the selective degradation of damaged mitochondria.
Using CRISPR-based genetic screening, we have identified candidate genes involved in this process. This summer project offers students an exciting opportunity to investigate these genes and explore their roles in regulating mitochondrial health.
