Description

NSF: Accelerating Research Translation (ART)

The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) is pleased to announce this limited submission funding opportunity/award.  Limited submission programs allow only a select number of applicants from each institution.  In order to determine which PIs will be selected as the official applicants from UConn/UConn Health, an OVPR internal competition may be necessary (full process is described at our website).

All PIs who wish to be considered for this opportunity must submit a notification of intent to submit form through the UConn Quest Portal by the due date listed below.  PIs must be selected and approved by the OVPR to be eligible to submit to this sponsor.

Program Information/RFP: https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2023/nsf23558/nsf23558.htm

Quest Portal Program Link: https://quest.uconn.edu/prog/ART

Keywords: translational research, regional innovation ecosystems, institutional infrastructure, training opportunities, societal impact

Award Details: $6,000,000

Number of UConn Applicants: 1 total from UConn/UConn Health

Internal Concept Deadline: 2/24/2023 at 12 noon.

Sponsor Full Proposal Deadline:  5/9/2023

Additional information:

NSF ART is an exciting program designed to advance research translation efforts at an institutional level, building capacity through improving translational research infrastructure, innovative graduate/postdoc training in translational research, translational research (TR) seed projects, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA).  It offers a unique opportunity to leverage UConn’s strengths and resources in this area while addressing key gaps and bottlenecks, all with the goal of raising the profile of translational work as an important next step after fundamental research discoveries and increasing participation in translational research across the University.

Because of the unique institutional focus of this opportunity and expected interest from multiple PI teams, the selection process for this opportunity will diverge from our usual limited submission process.

  • In place of NOIs and full pre-proposals, we ask for brief concept summaries—no more than 200 words—addressing how your team would approach the four core components of the program (translational research infrastructure/capacity building, graduate/postdoc training in TR), Seed TR projects, and DEIA).  Concepts should also include a preliminary list of interdisciplinary team members (with roles) and identify other faculty who may be involved.  Concept submission is due by Friday, 2/24 at 12 noon.
  • Given the focus on institutional TR infrastructure and capacity, the selected team can count on the full support and partnership of OVPR/TCS.  Please plan on including AVP Abhijit Banerjee as a co-PI on your concept.
  • Concepts will be evaluated by the OVPR and Provost’s office, and notifications about team formation will be sent out within a week.
  • Please note that given the broad focus of the program, if there are complimentary projects or components that add synergies, the OVPR may ask teams to work together on one combined proposal.
  • Concepts will be evaluated based on their intellectual merit (20%), the interdisciplinarity (cross-department/cross school and college) of the approach (20%), their alignment with NSF ART program goals and requirements (30%), and their alignment with the institutional priorities of the University (30%)

Before submitting concepts, teams are strongly encouraged to attend the NSF ART introductory webinar on 2/21 and review the overview slide deck created by OVPR RDS.
